Summer driving is in full swing here in Ohio, and July heat can accelerate tire wear. Even if your tread looks OK, real safety hazards can be hiding under the surface. Today we’ll walk you through the top 5 signs you need new tires, easy self-checks, and when to bring your vehicle into Ohio Auto & Truck Center.
1. Tread Depth Is Too Low
Why it matters: Adequate tread prevents hydroplaning and maintains traction. The legal limit is 2/32″, but we recommend replacing at 4/32″, especially during rainy summer storms.
How to check:
- Quarter test: Insert a coin head-first into a tread groove. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, it’s time to replace.
- Tread wear indicators: When these rubber bars appear level with the tread, replace tires immediately.
2. Uneven or Patchy Tread Wear
Spotting the issue:
- Center wear = overinflation
- Edge wear = underinflation
- Inner/outer-only wear = alignment or suspension issues
- Feathered edges = misaligned or drifting out-of-balance
Why it’s a problem: Uneven tread leads to poor handling, increased blowout risk, and shorter tire life. At Ohio Auto & Truck Center, we check alignment and balance to ensure even wear and safer mileage.
3. Cracks, Bulges, or Blisters in Sidewall
What to look for:
- Cracks/Dry rot – rubber breakdown from age and heat
- Bulges or blisters – indicate internal tire damage or separation
- Cuts/abrasions – especially after hitting potholes or debris
Risks: These defects can cause sudden blowouts, especially on hot July highways. If you see any, don’t delay—bring your vehicle in right away.
4. Vibration or Thumping While Driving
If you feel persistent vibration, a thumping noise, or your steering wheel is shaking oddly, your tires might be out of balance, deformed, or have internal belt issues. While balancing sometimes helps, often the solution is new tires, especially once vibration reappears.
5. Tires Are Over 6 Years Old
Even if they still look usable, rubber degrades with time, especially under sun exposure and heat. Most tire manufacturers recommend replacement at 6–10 years.
Check the DOT code on the sidewall—last four digits show manufacture week/year (e.g., “3119” = 31st week of 2019).
